Richard S. Dick, Ph.D., Chief Technical Officer

Dr. Dick has a unique blend of education and experience that have brought him international recognition for advancing electronic health record technologies (EHR, EMR, PHR) from multiple standpoints: as a visionary, a designer/architect, and as an industry spokesperson. A veteran of both the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medicine (IOM)—where he directed the landmark IOM Study that launched our present EMR-era and co-authored the often-quoted seminal work, The Computer-based Patient Record: An Essential Technology for Healthcare (1991, 1997)—he led major research initiatives at the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and supervised MEDLINE.

As the individual who conceived, designed, and led development of what may arguably be the largest pharmaceutical databases in the U.S. (five years of Rx data on over 200M Americans, updated and current every 24 hours), Dr. Dick has earned the characterization given him by Dr. Clayton M. Christensen, prominent author and professor at the Harvard Business School, as “one of our most disruptive innovators.” The holder of several patents as well as ones currently pending, Dr. Dick is a “serial entrepreneur” who has been successful in getting support for innovative ideas and successfully launching them into the marketplace.

Dr. Dick led and developed successful strategic plans—based on actual execution—for some of the largest and most prominent healthcare IT companies; designed and built the largest realtime master person indexes (MPI) in the U.S. (>100M people in just one of these MPIs); conceived and architected some of the most innovative designs for healthcare data-warehousing applications; and conceived, designed, and is now proving the value of the Composite Clinical Data Dictionary, or C2D2— the true missing link for achieving the fundamental but elusive goal of genuine semantic interoperability, and in every field, not just healthcare.

Dr. Dick received his Ph.D. in Medical Biophysics and Computing (under Homer R. Warner, MD, PhD) from the University of Utah’s world-class Medical Informatics M.D./PhD program (equates to a Ph.D. in CS + first 2 yrs Med School). He was the recipient of the 2006 Award for excellence, outstanding achievement, and special recognition in Applied Medical Informatics presented by the Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems (AMDIS).

As Senior Applications Developer at NxLight, Stan worked closely with the java server team to integrate core product technologies into Web-deployable applications to service clients' application needs. The company’s core technology is centered on business transaction processing of documents that require authenticated, legal, and secure electronic signing via Web applications, and Stan was responsible for proof-of-concept prototyping of client proposals preparatory to formal definition and code design. He was responsible for the definition, design, and development of the client Web application being marketed to the Real Estate Industry for the processing of residential sales transaction documents, and in this role he worked closely with clients to ascertain business application needs and from these analyses create project definitions as well as coding specifications. He was also responsible for the integration of the company’s technology into the largest private student loan company in the country (FMER) and worked with internal technical staff, Experian, and Bank of America.

Over the past ten years, Stan has held positions as Senior Solutions Engineer at Next Page, Web Development Technical Lead and Senior Integrations Specialist at ILumin, Senior Web Architect at Nex2, and Senior Software Design Engineer at NuSkin International.

Stan’s ability to attract and manage top talent, comprehend and communicate with non-technical business leaders and colleagues, and contribute to the company’s business development efforts—on top of his first-rate development abilities—make him a rare find and an extremely valuable member of the YTC team.
